A new Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) opened in November 2015 at I-65 at Worthsville Road in Johnson County.
Built at a cost of $16.1 million, the new interchange will enhance economic growth, reduce congestion, and provide better east-west connectivity and traffic movement in Johnson County. The interchange also will ease congestion at the existing I-65 interchanges at Main Street and at Whiteland Road in Johnson County and reduce expected crashes on I-65 and nearby area surface streets.
The area has experienced substantial commercial and residential growth, resulting in large increases in traffic volume. Residential and commercial development is also expected to continue to grow in this area which will add to the volumes of traffic moving through this area.
INDOT identified the Diverging Diamond Interchange as the preferred alternative and a joint venture of E&B Paving, Inc., and Gradex, Inc., two central Indiana construction firms, was awarded the construction contract. A groundbreaking ceremony for the I-65 at Worthsville Road DDI was held in October 2014.
Construction began in late 2014 and demolition of the old Worthsville Road bridge over I-65 began in March 2015. Work in the summer and fall of 2015 included the construction of the new ramp areas and the new Worthsville Road bridge over I-65, which is a 246-feet, two span, concrete beam bridge. Periodic lane closures and/or rolling slowdowns were required on I-65 during construction.
