Buckle Up Phone Down

  • INDOT
  • Current: Buckle Up Phone Down

The Buckle Up Phone Down movement began with the Missouri Department of Transportation in 2017. Since then, a number of other states have come on board in effort to change driver behavior and improve roadway safety across the country.

Unrestrained drivers and passengers, as well as distracted driving continue to be contributing factors in serious and fatal crashes in Indiana. As incidence of crashes continues, INDOT is renewing its focus on safety, launching a new agency goal: to reduce fatalities and incapacitating injuries on Indiana roadways by 25 percent in 10 years and reduce work zone incidents by five percent. As a step toward this goal, INDOT officially announced its adoption of Buckle Up Phone Down in late 2023.

By joining the Buckle Up Phone Down movement, you can play a crucial role in improving roadway safety in the Crossroads of America.

BUPD Tips

Utilize Phone Mounts & Bluetooth!
  • In July of 2020, Indiana passed the Hands-Free Law, prohibiting drivers from holding or using a mobile device while driving. If you must use maps or take a call, utilize phone mounts and Bluetooth connectivity to keep your hands free.
Buckle Up!
  • Buckling up every time you get in a vehicle is a simple, yet effective, way to protect yourself in a crash. Wearing a seatbelt in the front seat of a passenger car reduces risk of fatal injury by 45 percent and moderate or critical injury by 50 percent according to NHTSA. Buckling up is your best defense against a distracted driver.
The Text Can Wait!
  • If you must send or receive a text, pull over to a safe location and park your car first. If you have passengers, appoint a “designated texter” to handle all your texting.
Do Not Disturb!
  • Turn on "do not disturb" while driving, or a similar app to block incoming calls and messages while the vehicle is in motion.
