Cable Barrier Tool Kit

Cable Spreader
This INDOT innovation improves safety and efficiency during cable barrier maintenance. The cable rail spreader uses an electric impact driver to pull the second and fourth cables toward the operator while pushing the third cable away. This motion creates enough space for crews to easily drop a new post into place.
Before this tool was developed, crews relied on a T‑bar, which could slip loose and cause pinched fingers between the cable and the tool. The new spreader provides a more stable, controlled, and safer way to position cables, reducing the risk of injury and helping crews complete barrier repairs more efficiently.
Sheared Post Puller
This INDOT innovation provides a safer and more efficient way to remove cable barrier posts that have broken off at ground level. The sheared post puller attaches to a truck’s plow lift arm and uses that lifting force to extract damaged posts without the need for digging or manual prying.
The tool is lowered into the hollow center of the sheared post, where it applies outward pressure from the inside. This pressure allows the post to loosen and lift cleanly from the ground. The design works with all brands of cable rail, giving crews a universal solution that speeds up repairs and reduces physical strain.
Hydraulic Post Puller
This INDOT innovation provides a powerful solution for removing cable barrier posts that are frozen or stuck in the ground. The hydraulic post puller connects to a dump truck’s hydraulic system, using its lifting force to pull posts straight out with minimal manual effort.
The tool works with all brands of cable rail, giving crews a versatile, reliable option during barrier repair and replacement. By reducing physical strain and speeding up post removal, this innovation helps INDOT teams work more safely and efficiently in the field.
