High Winds Sign and Windsock

Submitted by: Janelle Boyd, Tim Watson, John Stolle, Jonathan Tarter, & Matthew Williams (Crawfordsville District)

This INDOT innovation uses windsocks and high‑wind warning signs as a cost‑effective, easy way to alert motorists to hazardous wind conditions. While these signs help all drivers stay aware of changing weather, their primary purpose is to warn truck drivers and motorists pulling campers or trailers about strong winds and the direction the wind is coming from. Windsocks provide a clear visual indication of dangerous crosswinds that can impact vehicle control or even lead to rollovers, helping keep Hoosiers safer on Indiana roadways.
