Construction of the U.S. 224 road replacement project in the city of Decatur began in December 2016 and was completed in November 2017. The project improved the serviceability of U.S. 224 by raising the roadway above the 50 year flood elevation of the St. Mary's River.
Project scope
Length - One-half mile
Location - East side of St. Mary's River bridge to just east of Jackson Street
What's new? - New pavement, curbs, storm sewers, lighting and traffic control devices
Floodplain mitigation - Two compensatory storage sites to mitigate floodplain impacts caused by raising US 224
High water events - A 12' by 7' box culvert was installed to equalize flow during flood events
