Q&A with County Coordinator Samantha Bobbitt

What do you consider the key accomplishment(s) of your county's bicentennial celebration?

  • I believe the Bicentennial Celebration in our county showed the true bond our community has with the past and the future.  It will be something for the children of Daviess County to remember and tell to their children.

What Legacy Project do you most like to tell people about, and why?

  • We had a 20's themed kick-off party complete with 20's style dress and decorations. It was a fun time kicking up our heels and celebrating our Bicentennial year to come.

Describe a highlight or most memorable moment related to your county's bicentennial celebration.

  • The most memorable time from our celebration was the Bicentennial Parade on July 9th, 2016, with more than 180 floats and entries. Washington Main Street was packed like it used to be 50 years ago and it was the biggest parade of most of our lives.

How/where are you preserving information and artifacts related to your county's celebration?

  • We plan to have a viewable time capsule of sorts with items from the previous time capsule as well as items from the Bicentennial year.

Daviess County Legacy Project

​Daviess County Facts

Daviess County was named for Maj. Joseph Hamilton Daviess, U.S. District Attorney for Kentucky, killed at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.

The settlement of the county began along the White River that afforded farmers a convenient means to transport their crops for sale. The county was originally heavily forested in the northeast leading to a thriving timber industry during the first half of the 1800s.

About the courthouse: Sutton and Routt were the architects and the building was completed in 1929.

Daviess County Historic Geo-caching Trail links history with the fun activity of geo-caching.

Using a GPS device to find the sites you are able to log in and show you have participated in the high tech scavenger hunt. Each site has a phone number to call that details the historical information pertinent to the site.

Nearly 725 Old Order Amish families make their home in Daviess County and welcome tourists to hometown restaurants, inns, auctions, flea markets and special community events.

Experience Dinky’s Auctions held every Friday evening by the Amish community of Daviess County. Ten to 14 auctioneers promoting everything imaginable. Specialty Auctions are also held throughout the year.

Host to the Pheasant Put and Take. The facility includes a 1400-acre lake, boat rentals, campsites with electric hookups, a fishing hatchery, fish cleaning stations, bait, and turkey, deer, rabbit and squirrel hunting.  

Daviess County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau

Daviess County is also a favorite destination for outdoor recreation. Escape to this South Central Indiana destination to enjoy fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor activities among the rolling rural hills.  

The Daviess County Museum

Located on Main Street in Washington in the old Masonic Lodge building, originally constructed in 1868 and financed by money from the California gold rush. The museum a large collection of artifacts and historical exhibits relating to the history of our county dating back to its founding in 1816 and before.
