What do you consider the key accomplishment of your county's Bicentennial celebration?

• Bringing the county and city together in celebration of our state's Bicentennial. Refreshing memories of days gone by and learning about our heritage.

What Legacy Project do you most like to tell people about, and why?

• Rush County Tours for elementary students. They are going to continue to offer this for adults.

Describe a highlight or most memorable moment related to your county's Bicentennial celebration.

• The flag flown over Main Street when the Bicentennial Torch was brought into Rushville, which is the center of Rush County.

How/where are you preserving information and artifacts related to your county's celebration?

• The plan is to house on the south entry wall of the Rush County courthouse.

• 2 organizing everything then day of about 25 preparing the cookout on the courthouse lawn.

Rush County Facts

Rush County was formed in 1822. It was named in honor of Dr. Benjamin Rush, who signed the Declaration of Independence.

About the courthouse: A. William and Edwin Rush were the architects and the building was completed in 1898.

Tony Stewart, current NASCAR driver and former Indy Racing League champion is also referred to as the “Rushville Rocket.” Stewart grew up in Columbus, Indiana but started his racing career while living in Rushville. There is a small drive next to Rushville Consolidated High School named Tony Stewart Drive after the famous NASCAR driver.

Wendell Wilke ran his famous campaign for President of the United States from the Durbin Hotel in downtown Rushville.
