Opportunities
Opportunities to affect conservation goals for species and ecosystems across Indiana require creative solutions to modern problems. During the 2025 SWAP revision process, partners from across the six Indiana planning regions met virtually and in person to come up with such solutions. The roadmaps created by these partners were developed into strategies aimed at achieving a common goal. These creative solutions present opportunities for any partner, now or in the future, to open the SWAP and find an area where they can contribute.

- How Opportunities Were Developed
Through the SWAP process, representatives of a wide array of conservation, education, and business groups identified natural elements that were important to the Hoosiers they serve. These included habitats, species, ecological systems, and other conservation targets. However, much of the language used to discuss these targets overlapped, enabling the consolidation of many into a few. 28 opportunities were developed to help achieve some of the most desired conservation outcomes for the next 10 years.
- Opportunities for Collaboration
Approaching conservation can be overwhelming given the limited resources of an individual or organization. However, the SWAP was developed by a large group of partners from across the state - each with their own area of specialization. Not all opportunities in the SWAP will be achievable by any single group. However, collaboration is encouraged to pool resources and achieve a greater objective.
The opportunities to help Indiana’s ecosystems and species of concern go beyond the 28 listed in this iteration of the SWAP. New collaborations and continued conversations will help develop more opportunities for conservation in Indiana. For help making connections with partners in Indiana, please reach out to DNR.
