The Indiana State Police is the central repository for criminal history information in Indiana. Records contained within an individual’s criminal history file may be expunged or sealed under Indiana law. A petition for expungement or seal can be filed with a local court of jurisdiction in Indiana by an individual (pro se) or by private legal counsel. The Indiana State Police cannot give legal advice regarding the filing of a petition.
Once an expungement/seal is granted, the verified petition and order granting the petition is forwarded to the Indiana State Police Expungement Section by the local court for processing. Processing of an expungement will be delayed if not all required paperwork is submitted. Upon receipt of these documents, the Expungement Section will process, review, and comply with the order.
