Volunteer Chaplain Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Master of Divinity degree, an equivalent qualification, or a higher degree. Without a Master of Divinity, applicants must meet one of these alternatives:
- A B.A. degree in philosophy or a related field, plus five years of full-time ministry experience.
- Ten years of full-time ministry experience and the following education requirement: Must be a high school graduate, as evidenced by a diploma or high school equivalency diploma issued by an accredited institution, or have successfully graduated from a homeschool program.
Applicants must also:
- Be ordained, or hold the equivalent status, in a faith group recognized by the U.S. Military.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Have expertise in theology, psychology, and group and family dynamics.
- Relate to people from varied backgrounds and work with people regardless of religious affiliation.
- Work effectively under pressure and in stressful situations.
- Maintain confidentiality and communicate effectively in speaking and writing.
- Minister to the needs of ISP personnel and their families.
- Successfully pass a background investigation.

Chaplains accompany officers on patrol, connect with personnel, and respond to critical incidents and disasters. They assist during crises and may provide religious support when invited and appropriate, respecting the different backgrounds and faiths of those they serve.
