Basic Eligibility Requirements and Consideration Factors
Eligible candidates for recruit school must:
- Be a United States citizen
- Be at least 21 years old when appointed as a police employee.
- Have vision correctable to 20/50.
- Possess a valid driver's license to operate an automobile.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED.
Selection Process

- Superintendent's Review
The expected duration of the selection process will be approximately three to four months.
Any applicant, who competes in a selection process for a position as a Capitol Police Officer and is unsuccessful in achieving hiring status, shall not be excluded from competing in any subsequent selection processes.
Recruit Academy
The Indiana Law Enforcement Academy is a live-in academy located in Plainfield, IN and comprises a course of academic and field instruction designed to acquaint the applicant with the performance, functions and duties of a Capitol Police Officer. The conduct of the school closely corresponds to training for officer candidates in military services. Training is typically conducted Monday through Friday with recruits returning home on the weekends.
- Applicants who attend the training school are furnished lodging and meals at no expense to them.
- This training is academically recognized by some universities, and credit may be earned for successful completion of the school.
- Trainees may be dismissed at any time.
Probationary Period
During the officer's first year as a Capitol Police Officer, the officer is on probation and may be discharged at any time without recourse to a formal hearing. Upon satisfactory completion of the first year as a Capitol Police Officer, the officer may receive a permanent appointment, and then can be discharged upon preferment of formal charges in writing, and has recourse to a public hearing before the State Police Board, if desired.
General Information

Employees are selected solely upon merit and without regard to geographic location. As a Capitol Police Officer you are subject to availability for duty 24 hours a day.
- Authority and Work - Capitol Police Officers are empowered to exercise full police authority. Capitol Police Officers are tasked with providing the protection for elected officials, visiting VIPs, and 20,000 state employees and visitors daily along with the enforcement of state laws. The highest priority of a Capitol Police Officer is the physical security of the buildings, properties, and personnel in and around the Government Center Complex.
- In-Service Training - All Capitol Police personnel are required to attend periodic re-training courses. A re-training school may last for several days, and it provides a means for Capitol Police personnel to review past training and to become aware of new developments in police work.

- Group Hospitalization with medical insurance is available to those who desire this type protection, with a portion of the premium paid by the State of Indiana.
- Uniform, ordnance, and other equipment are furnished by the Department.
- Police employees receive 12 work days annual vacation leave with pay. Additional days are granted after 5, 10 and 20 years of service to a maximum of 25 days annually.
Information secured through testing and investigation will be held in strict confidence. Applicants are responsible for all expenses incurred by them in connection with travel, etc., when reporting for tests, physical examination and interviews.
