Sergeant Hatfull, along with other state police officers, responded to the residence of a suicidal subject in Posey County. After a stand-off of several hours, Sergeant Hatfull led the Emergency Response Team into the residence, where, he was shot and fatally wounded by the subject. A United States Marine Corps veteran, Sergeant Hatfull was posthumously promoted to Lieutenant, the only officer to receive such a promotion from the Indiana State Police.
