About the Healthcare Engineering Program

The mission of the Healthcare Engineering Program at the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) is to improve the health and safety of healthcare, school, and childcare facilities. The program reviews and approves construction plans for regulated facilities to assure that they are constructed in accordance with state and nationally recognized medical, health, safety, and accessibility standards.

The Healthcare Engineering Program consists of engineering programs in support of healthcare licensing and certification programs for acute care and long-term care providers, children's group home/private secure home, and child care institutions.

Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) Guidelines

New Construction

• The 2018 edition of FGI guidelines is mandatory without waivers for plans submitted on or after Jan. 1, 2020. Waivers may be requested.
• Firms wishing to use the 2022 edition of the FGI guidelines may do so, but no waivers will be accepted.

Submission of Construction Plans

IDOH and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) maintain the web-based portal for receiving and reviewing construction plans to assure that they are constructed in accordance with state and nationally recognized medical, health, safety, and accessibility standards.

Access the online portal by clicking here.

Step #2

Complete the application and pay the corresponding fees.

Step #3

Await email from IDOH with instructions and information to the architect/engineer, which will include the assigned project number, instructions for submitting plans, and instructions for all required documents.
