State Forests

These dashboards provide an overview of Indiana State Forest data such as growth, mortality, and removal. They also describe the various species across the diameter classes in the forests as well as providing insights into invasive species found. Finally, estimates of forest carbon across years and the different types are shown. Examples of the questions that can be answered with these dashboards include:

  • What is the overall growth of live and sawtimber trees?
  • How have the trends for growth, mortality, and removal per acre fared over time?
  • What are the top 10 species in Clark State Forest?
  • How does the species distribution across the diameter classes compare?
  • What is the oak, maple and cherry species distribution for live trees?
  • What are the top 10 invasive species in Morgan-Monroe State Forest?
  • What was the invasive cover percentage and the number of acres of different invasive groups in 2018?
  • How is the carbon distribution across the different forest types for Yellowwood State Forest in 2019?
  • How does the carbon distribution vary across the different forest types over time?
  • Glossary
    • Aboveground live: Carbon in live trees and saplings aboveground on forestland measured in short tons.
    • Belowground live: Carbon in live trees and saplings belowground on forestland measured in short tons.
    • Cuft: Cubic feet.
    • Diameter class: Tree diameters in inches.
    • Down dead: Carbon in downed or dead   trees on forestland, measured in short tons.
    • Doyle: A hardwood volume estimation used in the Midwest that takes into consideration log taper, bark thickness and measurement on the small end of a log.
    • Forest floor: Carbon in litter on forestland measured in short tons.
    • Growth: Estimated number of trees grown.
    • Int ¼: A different measurement standard that is more universally accepted across a larger region of the hardwood area that typically results in more board feet for the same log versus the Doyle scale.
    • Invasives/invasive group species: Nonnative plant species.
    • Mortality: Estimated number of tree deaths/mortality.
    • Net growth: Estimated tree growth minus the estimated number of tree deaths/mortality
    • Removal: Estimated of trees removed.
    • Saw: Estimated number of timber trees.
    • Sawlog-size: Estimated number of acres with trees in the large diameter (i.e., parameter minus  diameter class of less than 9 inches).
    • Species/species group: Different tree species/group of tree species.
    • Species group major: Softwoods and hardwoods.
    • Soil: Soil organic carbon on forestland measured in short tons.
    • Standing dead: Carbon in standing dead trees on forestland measured in short tons.
    • Tree type: Considering live, removals and standing dead tree types.
    • Type: Different forest carbon pools
    • Understory above: Carbon in understory aboveground on forestland measured in short tons.
    • Understory below: Carbon in understory belowground on forestland measured in short tons.
