Sheriff Hiatt served as Sheriff of Grant County from 1861 to 1863

Bartley Hiatt has been one of the biggest mysteries I have ran into on this project. Sheriff Hiatt died in office on September 21, 1863. Unfortunately there are no death records which were kept by Grant County at this time. Sheriff Hiatt was a grocery keeper, according to the 1850 census in Jonesboro, Indiana. Sheriff Hiatt along with the founder of Jonesboro, Obidiah Jones, founded the Jones-Hiatt addition in Jonesboro. I made multiple trips to the Marion Public Library along with trips to the Gas City Public Library and Fairmount Public Library in an attempt to find more information on Sheriff Hiatt and how he died in office. Unfortunately, I was unable to come up with any information. I also was assisted by Jared Florence who had worked for the Clerk of Grant County and was able to find Sheriff Hiatt’s date of death and estate information but again there was no luck in finding how he died.

Obituary of one of Bartley's daughters

​Mrs. Elizabeth Spilman, 77, mother of Officer Seth S. Spilman of the Elkhart police force and Officer Hiatt B. Spilman of the New York Central police department, died at 11"30 Sunday night at the home of the latter, 1911 Prairie street. She had been in poor health for a long time, due to an impaired heart, and was bedfast the last five days. Mrs. Spilman was the widow of John Harry Spilman, who died March 12, 1923, at their home in Elkhart. They came to Elkhart from Chicago in 1900. Surviving beside the sons above named are two other sons, Oliver P. Spilman of Houston, Tex., and Forest B. Spilman of Alamosa, Colo.; eight grandchildren, and two Great-grandchildren. Mrs. Spilman, the daughter of Bartley and Drusilla (Johnson) Hiatt, was born Dec. 2, 1859, in Jonesboro, Ind.
