Sheriff Asbury Eyestone

Sheriff Eyestone was born on August 16, 1842, and died on October 1, 1915

Sheriff Asbury Eyestone also served in the Civil war as a private in the 8th Regiament in Company H. Sheriff Eyestone served two tours in the civil war and was finally mustered out on June 14, 1865 according to military records.

Asburyy E. Eyestone is a native of Fayette County, Indiana, and dates his birth from the 16th day of August, 1842.  His parents, Jonathan and Nancy (Bragg) Eyestone, were natives of Pennsylvania and Virginia respectively.  Jonathan Eyestone came to Indiana many yeasr ago and settled in Fayette, County, where he engaged in the dry goods business.  He afterward followed merchandising in Marion County, and in 1861 came to Grant County and engaged in argicultural pursuits two and a half miles northwest of Marion, where his death occurred August, 1865.  The immediate subject of this sketch passed his youth and early manhood in his native county, and obtained a fair English education in the country schools, which he attended until his seventeenth year.  He remained with his parents until 1862, at which time he entered the army, enlisting in the Eighth Indiana Infantry, with which he served until June 5, 1865.  His first active service as in southwestern campaigns, including battles of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, Vicksburg, Jackson, Mississippi, Fort Esperanza, Texas, and others.  The regiment veteranized in 1863, and was transferred to Sheridan's command in Virgina, where it took part in the battles of Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek, and other minor engagements.  In the spring of 1864 the Eighth was sent to Savannah, Georgia, and on the 5th of June following was mustered out at Hilton Head, South Carolina.  At the close of the war Mr. Eyestone returned to Grant County and resumed farming, which he has since carried on with good success, owning a beautiful place at the present time about one mile northwest of Marion.  In 1881 he was elected sheriff on the Republican ticket, defeating his competitor by a majority of 300 votes.  He discharged his duties of the office one term, since which time he has not been an aspirant for political honors.  He was married on the 17th of March, 1867, to Miss Fannie D. Clark, of Fayette County, Indiana, a union which has been blessed with the birth of one child--Mabel Eyestone, born March 1868.  Mr. Eyestone is a member of K. of P., K. of H. and G.A.R., and since his twenty-first year has voted with the Republican Party.

Asbury E. Eyestone Dies at Age of Seventy-two—Was Prominent in Republican Politics.

Asbury E. Eyestone, aged 72, former sheriff of Grant county, died at 1:30 p.m. Friday at his home, 905 West Third Street. Heart trouble was the cause of the death. He had been ill for several months.

Mr. Eyestone was one of the older residents of Grant county, having moved here when young. He resided on a farm in the county for many years. Mr. Eyestone was a life-long republican.

He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs. A. E. Gibson. One sister, Mrs. James Brownlee, also survives.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
