How long will the relay last?

The Relay will travel 3,200 miles starting on September 9, 2016 in Harrison County and end on October 15, 2016 in Marion County

How long will the torch be in my county?

Each county has a designated timeframe to carry the torch depending on the length of their route.  The Official route and torch relay schedule will be available later this year (2015).

Who will the torchbearers be?

The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay was created to honor Hoosiers who have demonstrated exceptional public service, achievement, acts of heroism and/or volunteer service to their neighborhood, community, region or state.  Torchbearers selected are current or former Hoosiers, representing all walks of life.  More than 2,200 torchbearers have been selected to carry the torch. Will the torchbearers be running the entire time they are carrying the torch?

No, although some torchbearers might choose to walk or run, the relay will use all modes of conveyance that are symbolic of the history and heritage of Indiana, including watercraft, farm equipment, a racecar, horse and wagon, antique automobile, and others.

Will the relay be coming through my county?

Yes! The Relay will be going through every county in the state! You can view the route in your county here.

Will the torch be constantly moving through each county?

The torch will travel 6 days a week with Monday of each week serving as a rest day. The torch will stop in each county for at least a short county-wide celebration.

If I’m not a torchbearer can I still be involved in the torch relay when it comes through my community?

Absolutely, all Hoosiers are encouraged to get involved and help us make the 200th year of Indiana the best one yet! Register to volunteer here: https://2016bicentorchvolinterest.my-trs.com/

If my county is having a special celebration for the bicentennial during the relay, who can I contact about helping with that?

Torch Relay: Facts

  • 3,200 mile journey across the state traveling through 92 counties
  • The Torch Relay will begin in Corydon, the state’s first capital, and culminate in Indianapolis on the Statehouse Grounds
  • The relay was designed to inspire Hoosiers and promote unity across the state by connecting people, communities, and regions
  • Starts on September 9, 2016 and ends October 15, 2016
  • The torch will travel 6 days per week (Mondays rest day) for 5 weeks/32 days
  • Walkers, runners and torch bearers employing modes of transportation that are representative of Indiana culture and heritage will move the torch along its route
  • Torchbearers were chosen from nominations by each county in the state
  • The torch will be accompanied by a caravan that includes the Indiana Bicentennial Experience
  • The Torch Relay will conclude on the Statehouse Grounds with a grand celebration for all Hoosiers
