The energy sector is a vital part of everyday life in the 21st century, and a lot of planning goes into every aspect of it.
Integrated Resource Planning
The main form of planning for electric utilities is known as an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). IRPs provide both a short-term and a long-term evaluation of resource alternatives to meet a utility’s future electricity requirements to supply power to their customers at the lowest reasonable cost while providing safe and reliable service. The planning process includes:
- A public advisory process to educate and seek input from customers and other interested stakeholders;
- Contemporary Issues Technical Conferences sponsored by Commission staff
- Information reported to and from the relevant regional transmission organizations;
- Modeling risk and uncertainty; and
- A report on each utility’s IRP by the director designated by the Commission (currently the director of the Research, Policy, and Planning Division).
Indiana’s eight electric utilities that provide generation and transmission services are required to submit IRPs to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) every three years, according to IC 8-1-8.5-3(e)(2). To see the current IRPs, click here.
