New research findings have emerged in the debate surrounding the origin of the term “Hoosier,” the demonym for a resident of the state of Indiana. The origin of this nickname remains a matter of great debate. Genealogical research suggests the first documented use can be traced to Martin Hauser, founder of the town of Hope, Indiana in 1830. This reference of the name “Hoosier” (including the “I”) is found in a letter written in 1831, one year later. The close proximity of Columbus to the Town of Hope and the timing of the letter lend credibility to the idea.
