Legacy Projects > Carroll County Historical Marker Rehabilitation Project Carroll County Historical Marker Rehabilitation Project

marker

All 18 of Carroll County’s cast aluminum historical markers will be assessed, repaired and repainted as needed to bring them back to original condition. Most of the work will be done by volunteers, with funding for supplies from local civic organizations. Some markers are relatively new, but most were placed in the 1970s and are very faded and in need of new, straight posts. Only three of the 18 are official state markers, and permission has been received to rehabilitate those as well as the locally placed ones.

Q&A with Legacy Project Coordinator Bonnie Maxwell

What do you consider the key accomplishment of your Legacy Project?

  • Complete rehab and re-painting of 14 of Carroll County's older cast aluminum historical markers. Replacement or repair of most posts. Many individual volunteers, organizations, companies, and government entities worked together harmoniously and quickly.

Describe a highlight or most memorable moment related to your Legacy Project.

  • While the original intention was to manage the project centrally, one town and one individual took it upon themselves to move forward with "their" markers before the main project got off the ground. This was the result of the Bicentennial committee kick-off meeting where the project was first discussed.
