Legacy Projects > Becoming a State: Studies for Cultural Panel 3 (Frontier life) in Thomas Hart Benton's Indiana Murals Becoming a State: Studies for Cultural Panel 3 (Frontier life) in Thomas Hart Benton's Indiana Murals

In 1933 the Regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton began an enormous mural tracing the social history of the State of Indiana for the Century of Progress International Exposition in Chicago (now housed in three locations on the Indiana University, Bloomington campus.) This installation features several preparatory drawings for the segment focusing on the period when Indiana gained statehood.  A related Noon Talk, “The Beauty of Indiana’s Constitutional Elm,” will be presented by Indiana history expert James H. Madison, IU’s Thomas and Kathryn Professor Emeritus of History, on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, 12:15-1:00 pm.
