Bicentennial Tour of Oliver Mansion & Studebaker National Museum
The Montgomery County Historical Society is sponsoring a bus tour to the Oliver Mansion Tour, Studebaker Museum and Notre Dame on April 7 in South Bend. The fee for the trip, $60 for members and $70 for non-members, includes bus trip, museum fees and gratuities. The Joseph D. Oliver Mansion was built for the Oliver family, founder of the Oliver Chilled Plow Works. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1895-96, it is a 38-room Romanesque Anne house designed by New York architect Charles Alonzo Rich. The furnishings on all three floors are original; giving visitors a glimpse of how the mansion appeared during the 72 years the Oliver family had occupancy. The Studebaker National Museum is state-of-the-art, 55,000-square-foot facility that opened in October 2005. The building has three levels and features fully climate-controlled galleries and storage facilities to ensure the best possible care for the collection. The Studebaker National Museum was designed by South Bend’s own James Childs Architects and features several design elements from Studebaker’s factory buildings.
