Legacy Projects > Pioneer Garden Pioneer Garden

The Pioneer Garden honors the early settlers of Carroll County with a free-standing bronze plaque located on Washington Street in front of the Historic Peirce Barn. It is surrounded by prairie flowers and native grasses dedicated to their memory. The plaque reads, “The Carroll County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of the brave men and women who left the comforts of home and family and faced the unknown to come west and settle what is known as Carroll County, Indiana.”   

Q&A with Legacy Project Coordinator Rosalie Wilson

What do you consider the key accomplishment of your Legacy Project?

  • Honoring the original pioneers of Carroll County and their families and all of those that have followed.

Describe a highlight or most memorable moment related to your Legacy Project.

  • Opening the box that contained the beautiful bronze plaque was awesome. It was the most beautiful thing we had ever seen and then-----picking up the marble insert with the bicentennial emblem to use as the centerpiece for our garden made everything come together. The night we had the dedication was a rainy mess. The local boy scout troop #155 raised the 15 star flag and Aaron Lafond played the trumpet. It was really beautiful.

How/where are you preserving information and artifacts related to your Legacy Project?

  • This garden is a permanent part of our Historical Campus. We have the Stone Barn and the Garden is located on the property between the Barn and the Canal Park entrance.
