Wetland Restoration

Experience Indiana’s natural heritage as 76 acres is restored to native wetlands and prairie grasslands at the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site in Rome City. Indiana’s best-selling female author and an early conservationist, Gene Stratton-Porter saw first-hand the destruction of our natural heritage 100 years ago. Today, we are restoring 76 acres to wetland and prairie, two habitats much needed in Indiana. This project celebrated all that Gene Stratton-Porter stood for and continues her legacy of preserving and protecting the natural world she loved so much and drew inspiration from for her novels. This major restoration has already seen the return of several species of birds and will create a living laboratory for learners of all ages to explore all that Indiana has to offer.

What do you consider the key accomplishment(s) of your Legacy Project?

  • 99 acres have been restored to wetlands and native prairies allowing the return of vital habitat for birds and other wildlife. This land is not only a way to preserve and protect Indiana's natural heritage but also a way to teach the importance of such an act.

Describe a highlight or most memorable moment reltaed to your Legacy Project.

  • Seeing the return of birds, frogs and other animals almost immediately has been a highlight. We're excited to use the new wetlands and prairie as an outdoor learning lab in the coming seasons. Our bird species count went from 7 just a few years ago to over 100!

How/where are you preserving information and artifacts reltaed to your Legacy Project?

  • The Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site and Society are photographing, writing articles and otherwise documenting this project.
