Carroll County Newspaper Archive

Carroll County Newspaper Archive is a free online database that includes searchable page images of all the newspapers published in Carroll County from the 1830s to the present.  More than 200,000 pages from papers from three municipalities are being digitized from more than 300 reels of microfilm.

Newspapers are an invaluable resource for local history and genealogy research since most of the information they contain is not available elsewhere in books or other sources.  Several historical research and writing projects are already underway by individuals using this archive; these projects will result in publications and programs that will be a part of the Bicentennial celebration.  A number of individuals are also posting interesting things they are finding in the newspapers on local Facebook pages, including “Camden Indiana Memories” and “You know you’re from Delphi Indiana when…”  These postings engage everyday people in historical and heritage reading and story-telling that they would not otherwise do.

Our project will add material not previously available in original paper or microfilm.

Q&A with Legacy Project Coordinator Kelly Currie

What do you consider the key accomplishment of your Legacy Project?

  • We were able to make thousands of pages of historically valuable county newspapers from 1838 to 2005 accessible online to people all across the country.

Describe a highlight or most memorable moment related to your Legacy Project.

  • We received a thank you note from a former county resident that read in part, "I am finding gems of information ... (yesterday, for example, I found a photo of my grandparents’ home on Summit Street under construction in 1939!). So bravo to all of you who are making it possible for those of us who live far away to research old newspapers."

How/where are you preserving information and artifacts related to your Legacy Project?

  • The Carroll County Newspaper Database is freely available via the website http://carrollcountyin.newspaperarchive.com/. We are also planning to create a hard drive backup of all the pages available on the site.
