In honor of the bicentennial of Indiana, The History Museum is creating an exhibit titled 200 Years of Indiana: A Celebration of Our History, which will be open to the public February 6 through December 31, 2016. This exhibit will fill the museum’s 5,000 square foot temporary exhibit gallery using artifacts, images, stories, and video to tell the story of our state’s past 200 years.

In celebration of Indiana’s bicentennial, 200 years of stories and artifacts that explore Indiana’s role in the Underground Railroad, Civil War, Industrial Revolution, Gilded Age, World War I, Roaring Twenties, World War II, and more are shown in Voyages Gallery.

As the repository and steward of our community’s rich local history, and by actively collecting and exhibiting the history of our state, the museum will be a place for the public to learn more about Indiana, and discover the vast and interesting history it holds. The History Museum seeks to be part of an active community and make a difference in the life of the citizens of our state.

To complement the exhibit, the museum will offer a full range of public programs throughout the year that relate to the bicentennial of Indiana. The museum will actively seek speakers, historians, community organizations, and other non-profits to collaborate on effective and engaging programs that reach a broad audience and offer different and exciting ways to teach history. Various topics will be explored both in the exhibit and in public programming opportunities so that a wealth of history and information can be shared.

During the time of this large exhibit, The History Museum will also have displays on Unseen Treasures of the Oliver Mansion, Indiana University South Bend’s Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts 25th Anniversary, The Architecture of Notre Dame, and Polished in Public, Fierce on the Field: The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. All of these displays and exhibit will complement the great history and legacy of the state of Indiana.
