Legacy Projects > Mishawaka and the Great War Mishawaka and the Great War

Dr. Thomas Murphy, Professor of History, from Indiana University at South Bend will give a presentation on the city of Mishawaka’s unique involvement with World War I. When the Germans invaded Belgium in 1914, many of the Belgium immigrants living in Mishawaka returned to Belgium to fight in the Belgium Army. The United States didn’t declare war until 1917, thus for three years Mishawaka was involved in the war through her Belgium veterans. Mishawaka’s history is just one piece in a collage of unparalleled stories of Indiana towns that makes up the fabric and essence of the State of Indiana.
