Benjamin Franklin was credited with saying, “Show me your cemeteries and I will tell you what kind of people you have”. This project will restore and preserve Cambridge City’s Capitol Hill Cemetery and, in the process, celebrate the community’s history and the interesting achievements and lives of the people buried there. Established in 1836, Capitol Hill is the final resting place of over 300 of the town’s earliest and perhaps bravest citizens, including veterans of the Civil War, the War of 1812 and one very unusual pioneer settler-Henry Knox. The son of a slave and a free woman, Knox worked for several of the city’s founding fathers before overcoming prejudice to run his own draying business for 32 years. As Indiana celebrates its 200th birthday, Capitol Hill will turn 180 years old.
