Following a devastating fire on the Paoli down town square in November 2010, a portion of our hometown square laid in rubble for months. Hoosier Uplands EDC purchased the land in 2011 and began rebuilding the property, naming it “Phoenix on the Square.” An area of land close by the square sat vacant. It too was purchased, the aging building there was demolished and that land became the staging area for equipment to do their job in the reconstruction on the Paoli square.
Exactly on the second anniversary of the fire, the new Phoenix was dedicated, leaving the neighboring land vacant once again. Hoosier Uplands donated the land to the Town of Paoli. Until now, the land has sat vacant and void. It became the perfect site to construct the Paoli Bicentennial Park. This joint venture became a mission for all involved to offer back to the town a wonderful green space to enhance the new look of the Paoli downtown square. It will offer a venue of entertainment and relaxation to the citizens of Paoli and all who visit here. Bearing the name Paoli Bicentennial Park, it will live for decades as a reminder of how, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, downtown Paoli live on.
