Gustave Baumann, German Craftsman-American Artist
Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) combined the ability of a woodcarver with the sensitivity of a painter to produce an unparalleled body of brilliant color woodblock prints. He made his first in Germany in the midst of the Arts and Crafts movement and continued to make them long after that era had passed away. “Gustave Baumann, German Craftsman-American Artist” will follow Baumann from Germany to Chicago, to rural Indiana, and then to New York and Provincetown, and finally to Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he settled in 1918 with subsequent forays in Arizona and California.
A printmaking press will be stationed in the space for visitors to create woodblock prints on specified dates during the exhibition with the assistance of a trained printmaker. This activity will engage visitors of all ages by giving them a chance to learn about Baumann’s process through hands-on art making. Visitors will be able to display their newly made prints alongside those made by other visitors.
