Legacy Projects > Along the Heritage Trail Along the Heritage Trail

Each month during the 2016 calendar year, Fort Wayne Monthly magazine's "Along the Heritage Trail" will feature a story related to Indiana's entry into the Union with subjects covered such as:  Fort Wayne in 1816 when "Whistler's Father" was the fort's commandant; Internal Improvement notions considered by Governor Jennings in his early "Message to the General Assembly" which eventually established Fort Wayne as a canal center; Laying out of the City of Fort Wayne and a connection with General Lew Wallace; Allen County in 1816 and how it shares a legacy with Knox and Randolph counties; The colorful Indian Agents who served prior to, during and immediately after 1816; John Tipton's Fort Wayne connection; Chief Richardville's service to his Miami people; Convention delegate William Polke's forgotten burial place in Fort Wayne.  These magazine articles will be included on the award-winning Allen County Fort Wayne Historical Society's Internet blog site, "Our Stories," at historycenterfw.blogspot.com.
