About AIM
The Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) is a national, cross‑sector commitment that promotes consistent and safe maternal care to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality. This is achieved through the implementation of evidence‑based Patient Safety Bundles, standardized sets of best practices designed to improve outcomes across birthing facilities. As a data‑driven quality improvement initiative, AIM emphasizes a collaborative and continuous approach in which facilities adopt bundles, measure performance, and refine their processes to ensure safer care for every birthing person.
Patient Safety Bundles
Patient Safety Bundles are structured, evidence‑informed collections of best practices developed by multidisciplinary experts to improve care processes and outcomes for pregnant and postpartum patients.
These bundles provide clear, actionable steps that can be adapted to a wide range of facilities and resource levels, creating a consistent framework for improving maternal care. Through this structure, each unit can evaluate its current practices, identify gaps, and strengthen care by adopting the nationally recognized best practices outlined in each bundle.
The Patient Safety Bundles, supported by specific quality metrics and measures reported through the AIM Data Center, serve as the foundation of the AIM program’s efforts to address the leading known causes of preventable severe maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States.
Indiana AIM
In January 2019, Indiana became a participating AIM state, marking a significant step toward strengthening maternal care and safety through consistent, evidence‑based clinical practices. Since joining, Indiana has expanded AIM from a single pilot effort to a coordinated, statewide initiative supported by four core partners: the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH), the Indiana Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative (IPQIC), the Indiana Hospital Association (IHA), and the Indiana Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC). Together, these organizations have built a shared infrastructure that integrates clinical expertise, hospital engagement, and data‑driven quality improvement. To date, IDOH has directly supported the implementation of four AIM patient safety bundles in Indiana: Obstetric Hemorrhage, Severe Hypertension, Care for Pregnant and Postpartum Patients with Substance Use Disorder, and Postpartum Discharge Transition.
Indiana hospitals have demonstrated a strong commitment to implementing proven, evidence-based practices that improve patient health outcomes. Although participation in Indiana AIM is voluntary, IDOH and the State Health Commissioner continue to encourage sustained engagement across the state. All birthing facilities in Indiana are currently participating in AIM.
