The mission of the Health Care Engineering Program is to improve the health and safety of health care, school and childcare facilities. The program reviews and approves construction plans for regulated facilities to assure they will be constructed in accordance with state and nationally recognized medical, health, safety and accessibility standards. The Health Care Engineering Program consists of engineering programs in support of health care licensing and certification programs for acute care and long term care providers, children's group home/private secure home and child care institutions (excluding child day care centers).

**NOTICE TO ARCHITECTS, ENGINEERS and PROVIDERS**
Implementation Plan for 2018 FGI Guidelines
2018 FGI Guidelines effective July 1, 2019 implemented as follows:
For new construction; 2018 edition will be mandatory, without waivers for plans submitted on or after January 1, 2020.
For existing structure modifications; 2018 is mandatory, with waiver consideration for plans submitted on or after January 1, 2020.
For plans submitted between July 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019, firms:
May use 2018 in total for the design;
May use 2014 in total for the design and request a waiver from 2018. However, the IDOH cannot waive a 2014 requirement; or
May use 2001 in total for the design and request a waiver from 2018;
May use 2001 or 2014 and request a waiver from the applicable part(s) of 2018.
Application and Health Fee Submission
Since April 18, 2016, the Indiana Department of Health, Health Care Engineering Program in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Fire Protection and Building Safety Division (DHS) implemented a ‘one stop’ web based portal. This provides for the submission of applications and fees simultaneously to both the IDOH and DHS. Effective Monday, June 19, 2016, the IDOH no longer accepts paper applications nor manual/paper based payment of fees. All applications and fees must be submitted through the web based portal.
Step 1: Access the ‘one stop’ web portal at: https://secure.in.gov/apps/dhs/drs/
Step 2: Complete the online application and pay the appropriate fees.
Step 3: All other instructions and information will follow in an email from the IDOH to the architect/engineer which will include the assigned project number, instructions for submitting plans and instructions for all required documents to be submitted over the State’s secure FTP site.
