Substance use prevention: alcohol

Alcohol is the most used substance in the United States, with over half the population age 12 or older reporting alcohol use in the past month (National Survey on Drug Use and Health). 
Indiana rates of alcohol use:

  • 46.5% Hoosiers (12 years and older) report current alcohol use (NSDUH, 2022)
  • 8.2% of 8th graders report monthly alcohol use (DMHA Dashboards, retrieved 2025)
  • 12.5% of 10th graders report monthly alcohol use (DMHA Dashboards, retrieved 2025)
  • 19.9% of 12th graders report monthly alcohol use (DMHA Dashboards, retrieved 2025)
  • 44.5% of young adults ages 18 to 24 report current alcohol use (DMHA Dashboards, retrieved 2025)
  • 55.7% of college students report current alcohol use (Indiana College Substance Use Survey – 2023)
