About Radioactive Materials Transportation

Indiana is a major hub for shipments of highway route control quantity (HRCQ), low-level radioactive waste (LLRW), high-level radioactive waste (HLRW) and spent nuclear fuel (SNF) via interstates and railways. Per Indiana codes 10-14-8 and 10-14-9, any shipment of LLRW, HLRW, SNF or HRCQ radioactive material is required to be permitted before traveling in Indiana.

  • HLRW and HRCQ Permits

    All HLRW and HRCQ permits must be applied for using the form below. When applying, please have information available about the shipper's organization, shipment carrier and shipment. If you have questions regarding the application, please contact hazmat@dhs.in.gov.

  • LLRW Permits

    Use the form below to apply for a permit.

    1. When applying, please have information available about the shipper's organization, shipment carrier and shipment.

    2. Other important information when filing the online application:

    • Keep all the information at hand when filing. If the web application times you out, you will have to retype all the information.
    • If you have questions regarding the online application, please contact hazmat@dhs.in.gov.
    • You will have to pay instant access and credit card fees besides the normal fees to use the service.

  • Radiological Response Training

    The Indiana Department of Homeland Security radiation programs facilitate and offer several radiological response trainings. IDHS offers Modular Emergency Response Radiological Transportation Training (MERRTT) specifically for radioactive materials transportation response. The MERRTT program is designed to teach first responders a comprehensive understanding of radioactive materials, radiological survey instruments, decontamination techniques for handling radiologically contaminated victims and resources available to assist during a response.
