Cary Myers, former county sheriff, dies

Cary Myers, 74, the sheriff of Grant County for 12 years died at 12:25 a.m. today at Marion General Hospital where he had been a patient three weeks.

Mr. Myers served two two-year terms as sheriff from 1941 to 1944 and two four year terms from 1951 to 1958 – the longest in history for any Grant County sheriff.

He was a native and life resident of Grant County and belonged to the Trinity United Methodist  Church and the IOOF Lodge.

After retiring as sheriff in 1958, Mr. Myers farmed some property he owned north of Marion. At the time of his death, he lived at 1910 N. Meridian St.

Survivors include the widow, Velma; one son, Phillip E. Myers, Marion; five daughters, Mrs. Duane (Gladys) Nall, Urbana; Mrs. Lester (Georgeanna) Cates, Mrs. Herman (Maryhanna) Hosier, Mrs. James (Eldonna) Bowden and Mrs. William (Carolyn) Hutchens, all of Marion; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Myers recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. L.G.D. Wertz will officiate and burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at Diggs Funeral Home, 504 W. Third St.
