Author Liza Hyatt shared poems and stories that were developed while following the path of the Wabash and Erie Canal, researching the lives of her canal building Irish ancestors who came to Indiana in the 1830s. In the bardic tradition of Ireland, Hyatt accompanied her poetry with Celtic harp. Hyatt’s tracing of canal history inspired others seeking to explore their own family history. A discussion period and dialogue about ways to creatively research our shared Hoosier heritage followed Hyatt’s presentation. 

Q&A With Legacy Project Coordinator Dan McCain

What do you consider the key accomplishment of your Legacy Project?

• The presenter, Liza Hyatt, was our Wabash & Erie Canal Association’s ANNUAL MEETING speaker in April 2016. Her presentation of poetry while using a harp was a very impressive program enjoyed by over 100 people that evening. She related history of the building of the Canal accurately documented. She used her ancestor’s “HAND ME DOWN” stories from notes, letters and a diary.  

How/where are you preserving information and artifacts related to your Legacy Project? 

• We have the poetry dialog digitally preserved in our Archives at the Canal Center and we have plans to present the digital recorded session on our media playback kiosk when we finish its creation. That feature will be in the Lobby of our Canal Center, 1030 West Washington Street, Delphi, Indiana 46923.

Total number of volunteers who participated.

• The Canal Board of 12 people were involved. All are volunteers.
