2024 Indiana Youth Tobacco Survey
Questions or ready to schedule the survey?
- What is the Youth Tobacco Survey?
- The Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS) is a school-based survey administered every other year (fall semester of the even years, such as 2022, 2024, etc.) that measures cigarette, e-cigarette, cigar, pipe, smokeless tobacco, hookah, nicotine pouch, Delta THC, and cannabis use among Indiana’s youth in grades 6–12.
- The survey also measures the impact of media and advertising, enforcement of youth tobacco access laws, school curriculum, and exposure to secondhand smoke.
- The high school and middle school survey questions may be viewed here:
- The survey sample includes 60 high schools and 60 middle schools (grades 6-12), and between two to six randomly selected classrooms per school will be surveyed.
- The Indiana YTS is an electronic survey with skip logic, which minimizes the burden on schools and provides an efficient option for survey administration.
- How is data from the YTS used?
- Data are used to plan and evaluate tobacco prevention and cessation programs geared toward youth in Indiana. Results from the 2022 YTS can be found here.
- Survey participation is voluntary and anonymous. Student anonymity will be fully protected as no identifying questions are asked, and responses are not linked back to the students’ devices or IP addresses. Data will not be reported by district or school, but rather for Indiana as a whole.
- IDOH works with selected schools to provide clear communication and written requests for parent/guardian consent in advance.
- What do schools receive for participating?
- Schools will receive an unrestricted stipend of $500 for their participation in the survey.
- Schools have the option of receiving a school-level report summarizing their results - helping them understand students’ needs. These reports will only be shared with the school. Schools have the option to survey the entire student body, which will lead to more meaningful data for the school.
Indiana Youth Tobacco Survey Listening Sessions
The latest data from the 2022 Indiana Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS) reveals a significant decline in commercial tobacco use among Hoosier youth, marking the lowest levels in the past two decades. E-cigarette usage, in particular, has hit its lowest point since 2012. While these results are encouraging, there remain concerning trends, including the frequent use of e-cigarettes, flavored tobacco product consumption, and susceptibility to cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use.
