Understanding TB Laboratory Testing for Public Health Nurses
APHL recently released an online course for public health nurses and/or clinicians about TB testing. Topics include quality specimen collection, how to detail the TB testing algorithm or workflow performed in laboratories, how to provide a high-level description of the tests performed within the TB testing algorithm, and any special testing that may be warranted. There is no cost associated with the course.

The CureTB program works to prevent the spread of TB among people who cross international borders. CureTB collaborates with health authorities throughout the United States and around the world to link people with TB to care at their destinations. The IDOH TB Epidemiologists coordinate with Cure TB when necessary.

Targeted testing is proactive testing of high-risk populations, but does not include TB contact investigations, Class B arrivals, or those seeking testing for employment. Examples include testing in local jails, homeless shelters, international university students, etc.
Targeted testing projects refers to targeted testing projects for groups done at sites outside the health department, as determined for convenience or by the needs of the groups being tested (e.g., annual testing at a correctional facility, ongoing testing of all new admissions to a homeless shelter).
Since 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has required all state TB programs reporting ≥150 TB cases a year to submit information on their targeted testing activities. Starting in 2025, targeted testing activities must be submitted by all states regardless of case count. In an effort to collect this data, we have created a REDCap form for LHDs to submit data for any targeted testing event held in 2026. The form can be accessed here.
All 2026 targeted testing data must be submitted by Feb. 26, 2027.
The IDOH TB epidemiologist will aggregate this data and submit it to the CDC by March 31, 2027.
