Enteric (Foodborne and Waterborne) Diseases

Overview

Enteric illness affect the stomach and intestines, often causing symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, or stomach cramps. Germs causing enteric illness typically enters the body through the mouth. These germs can be passed through food, water, animals, or by contact with feces (poop) of a person with the illness. Every year, millions of people become sick and thousands die from enteric illness in the United States. However, most cases can be prevented by following precautions, such as proper handwashing, handling food safely, and avoiding swallowing water while swimming.
