INDIANAPOLIS - In accordance with Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 327-2023, which established procedures to appoint members to the school board, Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner has announced the following three appointments to the new board of the Gary Community School Corporation.
1. Board Chair Michael L. Suggs - Director of Operations Integration Planning & External Affairs, Northern Indiana Public Service
2. Danita A. Johnson, Ph.D. - President & Chief Executive Officer, Edgewater Health, Inc.
3. Shontrai D. Irving, J.D. - Clinical Associate Professor of Business Law, Purdue University Northwest-College of Business
According to SEA 327-2023, the Gary Community School Corporation no longer requires special state oversight by the distressed unit appeal board, and will, therefore, transition to a new governing body made up of five members. Indiana’s Secretary of Education is charged with appointing three members to the board. The mayor of Gary and the Gary Common Council will each appoint one member.
