- What is the National Register of Historic Places?
The National Register of Historic Places is the federal list of historic properties that have been formally recognized by the National Park Service. The DHPA reviews and maintains the nominations for Indiana.

- What is the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures?
The State Register was created by an act of the Indiana General Assembly in 1981. All Indiana properties listed in the National Register are automatically listed in the State Register; however, properties can be solely listed in the State Register through a separate process. The survey and register section of the DHPA manages the State Register.

- How do I find out if a property is eligible for listing?
Before filling out and submitting a National Register of Historic Places or State Register application, DHPA staff recommend submitting a Request for Determination Eligibility Form. The National and State register application processes can be lengthy and take time and research. The DHPA staff can determine if a property is potentially eligible for listing in the registers before a great deal of time or resources are invested in the process.

- How do I apply for listing?
Prior to filling out the National or State Register form, you must determine if the property is eligible. Visit the Eligibility page to learn more about that process in order to save time and resources.

Those interested in applying for National or State register listing are strongly encouraged to contact the National Register Section before completing the application form to confirm that the property or district being proposed for nomination is eligible for listing. The National Register Section can provide applicants with valuable advice and information on how best to prepare a nomination.

- Can I write a nomination myself or do I have to hire a professional?
Anyone can prepare a National or State register nomination. The National Register Section can provide applicants with valuable advice and information on how best to prepare a nomination. If you want to hire someone to prepare a nomination, the DHPA maintains a list of qualified preservation and archaeology professionals that can be found here: DNR: Historic Preservation & Archaeology: Qualified Professionals Roster (in.gov). Inclusion on this roster does not constitute an endorsement by DHPA or DNR, neither does it guarantee that an individual has specific project experience.
- Can I hire someone to write my nomination?

DHPA does not charge a fee to submit an application for National or State register listing.
- What are the benefits of listing?
Listing in the National and State registers recognizes the significance of properties, provides protection in specific instances, and permits owners of certain types of properties to use tax credits or apply for grants.

- How can I order a plaque for my property?
A list of plaque manufacturers can be found here: DNR: Historic Preservation & Archaeology: National & State Registers (in.gov).
Note: The DHPA does not endorse any specific manufacturer. The companies listed are experienced in producing National Register plaques, but it is not necessary to obtain the DHPA’s approval before ordering a plaque nor does the DHPA require specific wording. Remember to be particularly careful when affixing the National Register plaque to your historic building in order to avoid unnecessary damage.
