SWEET

Stormwater Environmental Education Team or SWEET is comprised of representatives of stormwater management, parks and recreation, solid waste management, soil and water management, environmental non-profits and other professionals to develop and maintain environmental education opportunities within Monroe County, Indiana. You'll leave these events with knowledge and skills on why environmental stewardship is important along, with a sense of accomplishment knowing that you've made a difference in our community. Adopt-a-Stream is an all-volunteer program that offers an opportunity to be actively involved in conserving and maintaining the natural beauty of streams that run through public property owned by the City of Bloomington and Monroe County. City staff provides training and equipment for monthly stream monitoring and annual stream maintenance. Friends of Lake Monroe (FLM)

Is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and enhancing Lake Monroe and its watershed through science, advocacy, and public involvement. FLM published the Lake Monroe Watershed Management Plan in 2022 which quantifies water quality issues in the lake and outlines strategies for improvement. Current projects include a cost-share program for agricultural soil and water conservation practices, septic maintenance education programs, and shoreline cleanups.

CITIZEN SCIENCE: The district provides classroom presentations for students of all ages, from kindergarten to adult, on topics ranging from the basics such as reduce, reuse, and recycle to a variety of environmental stewardship topics associated with waste management, healthy people, and healthy ecosystems.

Managing stormwater to maintain/improve water quality and minimize flooding as it flows through human created physical infrastructure is an important goal of the Monroe County Highway Department Stormwater Program. Working with community partners, the Stormwater Program seeks opportunities for Monroe County residents and visitors to learn about stormwater infrastructure, natural habitats, streams and water bodies receiving managed stormwater.
