Persons Selling six (6) or more boats or boat trailers per year must be licensed by the Secretary of State.  Looking to become a licensed watercraft dealer in the State of Indiana? Just follow the steps below and you will be on your way!

Step 1 - Important legal review

We encourage those wanting to obtain their watercraft dealer license in the State of Indiana to review the applicable state statutes and administrative rules regarding dealer licensing. Please read Indiana Code 9-31 and 9-32 and Indiana Administrative Code 75 IAC 5 before moving on to Step 2.

Watercraft dealers must have an established place of business.  "Established place of business" is defined in IC 9-13-2-50.

Watercraft Dealers will be able to sell watercrafts and trailers used to haul watercraft with just a Watercraft Dealer license, no additional dealer used or new license is required.  If you sell other types of trailers then an additional dealer license is required.   

Step 2 - Completing the application

Complete the Application for Vehicle or Business Watercraft Dealer Business License (SF 13215).  In order to achieve superior service, accuracy and cost savings, please complete the application completely, and submit all required documents with the application.  Click on the link below to download the form.

The following must be submitted with the completed application:

  • Application fee - click here to learn more
  • Complete Background check - click here to learn more
  • $25,000 surety bond - Click here to learn more about the bond requirement 
  • Zoning approval - to be completed on the bottom of the application by local zoning board
  • Registered retail merchant certificate
  • Insurance (Certificate of Liability)* Required effective 07-01-2015
  • Photographs of the building, lot, sign, and posted hours of operation
  • Copy of valid photo ID issued by a government agency
  • Franchise agreement - only needed if "new" is marked on the application
  • Copy of Certificate of Incorporation or Certificate of Organization from the Indiana Secretary of State Business Services Division (if applicable).
  • Federal Identification Number provided by the Internal Revenue Service

*Business name and address on these documents must match the business name and address listed on application

Step 3 - Sign, seal and mail!

Once you complete all of the steps and ensure all paperwork is filled out correctly, send your documents to the following address:
