Application Instructions

  • Architect by Reciprocity without NCARB
    1. Completed Application: Applications may be submitted online.
    2. Application Fee: $520.00 to be paid by credit or debit card. All application fees are nonrefundable.
    3. Transcripts: Please upload at the time of application.. (Minimum B.S. degree from accredited college NAAB)
    4. Architect Training and Experience Report (IDP):  Required if licensed in another state for less than five (5) years.
    5. Verification of Employment/Reference: The Verification of Employment and Reference - Form 44668 must be completed and include
      • Applicant Portion
      • Sponsor Portion (to be filled out by applicant's employer/supervisor)
      • Covers period from date of graduation to present
      • If self-employed, a list of projects worked on and role played in each one, i.e. supervisor, principal, etc.
    6. Verification/Certificate of Licensure: Verification(s) from the state where you passed your exam(s) and all states where you hold or held licensure.  Must include examination information.  You may find the verification form here.
    7. Positive Response Documentation: If you answer "Yes" to any questions on the application, explain fully in a statement that includes all details. Include the violation, location, date, cause number, and disposition. Submit copies of court documents for each instance to support the statement. Please upload at the time of application.
    8. Name Change Documentation: Documentation of any legal name change if your name differs from that on any of your documents. Documentation may include a copy of your marriage certificate or divorce decree.  Please upload at the time of application.

  • Architect by Reciprocity with NCARB

    3. NCARB File: Requested thru NCARB to be made available to Indiana.  Will include transcripts, training, 3 references - 1 current, and work verification.  Note that the NCARB file does not need the verification or certificate for Indiana to accept it.

Renewal Instructions

  • Active Renewal Information

      Renew Online!

    • Architect and Landscape Architect registrations expired December 31 of odd-numbered years.
    • The architect and landscape architect renewal fee is $120.
    • Architects and Landscape Architects are required to obtain twenty-four hours of continuing education in each biennial licensure period. For more information regarding CE please visit our continuing education requirements page.

    Renewal notices are sent approximately ninety (90) days prior to the expiration date. License holders with valid email addresses on file will be emailed the renewal notice. Those who do not have valid email addresses on file will be mailed the license renewal notice; this notice is mailed to the address of record with the Board. The Board has no way of knowing whether or not a notice reaches its destination; therefore, when a notice has been emailed to a valid email address or mailed, the duty of the Board has been performed.

  • Inactive Status

    If you wish to renew your license to inactive status, you may renew online by selecting "Yes" when asked if you would like to put your license in inactive status. Maintaining inactive status requires you to continue to renew every 2 years and pay the renewal fee of $120. When renewing to inactive status, you are not required to complete continuing education. An inactive registered architect or landscape architect may not practice architecture or landscape architecture.

    If your license is on inactive status and you wish to renew to active status, you may email your request to the Board at pla10@pla.in.gov.  Please include your license number and copies of continuing education certificates verifying 24 hours taken in the previous 2 years. This status change should be made prior to completing your license renewal.

  • Retired Status

    If any registered architect or landscape architect desires to retire from the practice of architecture or landscape architecture in Indiana, the architect may submit to the board the architect's verified statement of intention to withdraw from practice. If you wish to request 'retired' status, please email your statement to pla10@pla.in.gov and do not complete the renewal process.

    If any retired architect desires to return to the practice of architecture in Indiana, the retired architect must meet the following requirements:
    If the certificate of registration has been expired for less than five (5) years, the retired architect must:
    (A) file with the board a verified statement indicating the architect's desire to return to the practice of architecture;
    and 
    (B) pay a renewal fee equal to the fee set by the board to renew an unexpired registration.

    If the certificate of registration has been expired for more than five (5) years, the retired architect must:
    (A) file with the board a verified statement indicating the architect's desire to return to the practice of architecture;
    (B) pay a renewal fee equal to the fee set by the board to renew an unexpired registration; and 
    (C) complete remediation and additional training established by the board based on the length of time the certificate of registration has been expired.

  • Reinstatement

    If your license has been expired for three or more years, you must reinstate your license to practice.  Please submit your reinstatement online with the additional documentation:

      • Letter of work history or resume to include the following information since the expiration of your Indiana license: place(s) of employment, a list of projects worked on, confirm if you have or have not placed your stamp/seal on any documents within the State of Indiana, and confirm if you have or have not performed work as described in IC 25-4-1-17 or IC 25-4-2-1 in the state of Indiana.
      • Verification of an active architect/landscape architect license in another state.
      • Proof of Continuing Education for the past two years from the date of your reinstatement application.
