Biographical Note:

James Brown Ray was born on February 19, 1794, in Jefferson County, Kentucky. He studied law in Cincinnati and then settled in Brookville, Indiana in 1818. Ray served in the State House of Representatives (1821-1822) and the State Senate (1822-1825). He became president protempore of the Senate when the lieutenant governor resigned to run for U.S. Congress and became governor when Governor William Hendricks was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1825. Ray was elected as governor at the end of Hendricks’ term and served in the office until 1831. He ran for the U.S. Senate in 1824, 1831, and 1837, but lost each time. After leaving office, he practiced law in Indianapolis. James Brown Ray died in August 1848.
