Biographical Note:
Claude Vernon Ridgely was born on January 29, 1881, in Richland County, Illinois. His parents were George Albert and Martha Ann (Madding) Ridgely. On February 7, 1887, he married Bessie Maguire. They had five children, Margaret, Mary, William, Helen, and Robert. He received LL.B. degrees from Valparaiso University (1904) and Northwestern University (1906). Ridgely and his family moved to Gary, Indiana, in the fall of 1906. In 1907, he formed a law practice with William F. Hodges. He continued in this practice for twenty years at which time he became judge of the Lake County Superior Court (1927-1937). After ten years on the bench, Ridgely returned to private practice. He served as attorney for the Board of Education and the Park Board. He died on September 11, 1963.

The collection contains a transcript of a tape created by Chris Black, Lew Wallace High School, of a talk given by Ridgely in 1955. Ridgely tells how he came to settle in Gary, Indiana, and describes his early experiences in the city
