SOS APM Success Story

Pain Points
- SOS was troubleshooting via word of mouth; Net 4 (call center) would report problems to the internal business services division staff and messages would keep piling up; we would log into the web server systems to grab error logs and go line by line to find the sources; even at that level, we would find false positive errors b/c at times the error was really above that line but the logs would end before then.
- InBiz is a front-facing customer application that is in a protected zone so you have to enter passwords over and over again, then load balance server and then do the same thing over for the other servers. Then we would grab multiple sets of logs because we don’t know where the error is happening for which server. The logs are then sent to the dev team which entailed a long process of combing through the logs and we may or may not find an answer and diagnosis. Turnaround time is the long and constant change of adding people to teams and trying to catch them up on what to look for in logs.
Our Solution and Approach
- AppD was able to identify which business transactions were trending as far as performance; clean-up & organizing in logical patterns we were able to take transactions from a few 100 down to 50
- AppD is sorting and trending Errors
- AppD is monitoring violations and anomalies, using set health rules and monitoring for anything outside the rules
- Ultimately matching front end to back end of applications
Technology and Solution Areas
- InBiz – front-facing customer application to meet business needs for permits, tax, license, etc.
- BSO – internal application for staff to look at work order transactions and approve/deny things
Success Highlights
Summary of Primary Objectives Accomplished
- AppD makes life so much easier. We can easily see issues before they are reported to the Net 4 call center.
- Drill downs are one of our favorite things because though I am not a developer, I can see stored procedures in the database by looking at the app agents and seeing the health status. I can then send these to the developers to do a code review of the site to make it as efficient as possible to speed up the processes. This makes for a quick turnaround and open discussion with developers who cost a lot. For example, we found a bar chart storing 4,000 characters and nothing we store is remotely close to 4,000 characters. I was able to send it to the developer because it doesn’t look right to set limits on bar charts and move to stored procedures. As a result, search submissions that were taking 5-10 minutes reverted back to taking seconds as it was originally taking.
- For Auto Dealer, it is now easier to make project managing tickets within our environment. If we see an issue, log it as a bug and send it off to our dev team with an email as soon as possible.
Testimonials
Tucker Walden, SOS System Administrator
- It has been the quickest, easiest turnaround to get started with AppD. It wasn’t like it took all our time and devotion to go live. Brad is on it!
