Your beneficiary is the person who will receive your retirement benefit money after you pass away. This decision must be made by you prior to your death. If you do not name a beneficiary for your retirement benefit money, INPRS will pay it to your estate when you pass away.
Judges' Retirement System
Judges who serve in eligible courts and receive a state salary participate in the JRS. Only judges who served prior to Sept. 1, 1985, can be members of the 1977 system. If you became a judge before Sept.1, 1985, you are a member of the 1977 System, unless you elected not to participate within 20 days after you began your term as a judge. If you terminated your employment as judge and returned to your position after Aug. 31, 1985, you are still a member of the Judges' 1977 System.
If you became a judge or began service as a judge after Aug. 31, 1985, you are a member of the 1985 System. Participating members contribute 6 percent of the statutory wage for a maximum period of 22 years. The State of Indiana is responsible for paying all of the benefits provided by the plan. Currently, annual appropriations are combined with court docket fees to cover actual benefit payments.

- Where did you get a different reported date of birth for me, and do I need to correct it?
INPRS compares member data with a national data repository that pulls from many sources such as credit bureaus. Sometimes, the data returned to us from the national source may not be correct. This does not mean you need to correct anything. However, you may consider going over any accounts of record where your birth date is significant such as with financial institutions you do business with, your employer, and your insurance provider.
- Can I buy extra service credit if I'm a member of an INPRS fund other than PERF or TRF?
Yes. If you're a member of the 1977 Fund, the Judges' Retirement System, or the Excise, Gaming, and Conservation Plan, you can buy additional service credit if you meet the eligibility requirements. Check your fund's member handbook for more information on the guidelines and requirements.
