Welcome Volunteers
We want your experience to be just as rewarding and meaningful for you as your interaction with each incarcerated individual should be for them, take a moment to read through the Volunteer Handbook and Welcome Packet to familiarize yourself with IDOC and our policies . A successful volunteer experience starts with the completion of your Volunteer Training and the important topics covered in the Training Modules located on this page. The Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC) at the correctional facility where you chose to volunteer will help guide you through the training process.
As you embark on the training, know that we value the commitment you are making to share your time, treasure, and talent with incarcerated individuals.
Some key points to keep in mind:
- As the largest state agency, the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) indirectly and directly employs more than 6,000 Hoosiers, supervises over 6,000 parolees, and is responsible for the safety and security of well over 20,000 adults and several hundred juveniles inside our correctional facilities across Indiana
- The IDOC currently operates 18 adult facilities, 3 juvenile facilities, 10 Parole Districts and is committed to the main tenets of our mission of promoting public safety by providing meaningful, effective opportunities for successful re-entry to society
- The thousands of volunteers offering their time make an incalculable impact on an incarcerated person’s life, helping them along their journey to return to society as a productive citizen
This training will build your foundation for a successful volunteer experience. It was designed with these key points in mind: your safety, the safety of incarcerated individuals, and the safety of our professional correctional staff.
Take your time to complete each module and direct any questions to the CEC at the correctional facility where you are volunteering.
